My reason for carrying the book is that it is slim and lightweight, quick to use for an amateur, and I can always follow up my research in weightier and more detailed tomes at home.

A handy guide to spotting birds, and a great way to keep them entertained on walks or trips to the seaside or countryside.
Usborne Spotter's Guide to Birds
I’ve been bird watching with an older version of this book for over 25 years and have still not managed to see all the birds in it yet! My children have the up-to-date edition of the book. The layout is simple for children to use and the paintings of the birds are excellent, and make bird identification easy. The scoring system makes bird watching great fun and exciting too, if you manage to spot a 25 point bird! If I had one criticism of the new version it would be that the choice birds and scoring system would benefit from being revised. Sadly, some of the birds have declined in numbers in the UK and new birds like the Little Egret are now becoming more common. However, it’s still a wonderful book and great value for money.
