Ready, steady, bake!

As November goes off with a bang on Bonfire Night, why not create your own bit of sparkle at home? It's time to put on those aprons!
Taken from The Very Best Baking Book for Children, these pretty star-shaped biscuits have cut out middles and a sparkly finish, made by sprinkling them with pink-tinted caster sugar before you put them in the oven. Follow the step-by-step instructions below and enjoy making (and eating!) these tasty treats:
Ingredients (to make 20 biscuits):
3 tablespoons caster sugar
pink food dye
75g (3oz) softened butter
1 small lemon
25g (1oz) soft light brown sugar
3 tablespoons runny honey
1 medium egg
175g (6oz) plain flour
You will also need two baking trays and medium and small star cutters
Use a paper towel to wipe a little cooking oil over the baking trays.
Put the caster sugar into a bowl, then add a few drops of food dye. Stir the sugar until it is pink. Then, spread it on a plate to dry.
Put the butter into a large bowl and stir it until it is fluffy. Grate the zest from the outside of the lemon. Put the zest in the bowl, too.
Put the brown sugar and honey in the bowl. Stir everything well with a wooden spoon, until the mixture is smooth.
Carefully break the egg on the edge of a bowl. Pour the egg carefully onto a saucer, so the yolk doesn't break.
Put an egg cup over the yolk. Tip the saucer so that the egg white dribbles into a bowl. Then, stir the yolk into the butter mixture.
Sift the flour over the butter mixture. Stir it in, then squeeze the mixture into a flattened bowl. Wrap it in plastic food wrap.
Put the dough in a fridge for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the oven to 180º C, 350º F or gas mark 4. Then, dust a clean work surface and a rolling pin with a little flour.
Roll out the dough until it is slightly thinner than your little finger. Then, use the medium cutter to cut out lots of shapes.
Use the small cutter to cut a star from the middle of each biscuit. Press the scraps into a ball, roll it out and cut more stars.
Brush a little egg white over each star and sprinkle some of the pink sugar on top. Use a spatula to lift the stars onto the baking trays.
Bake the biscuits for 8-10 minutes until they are golden. Leave them on the trays for 2 minutes, then lift them onto a wire rack to cool.
