Book of the Month - Cow takes a bow and other tales

2nd July 2014

Cow takes a bow and other tales

When the new titles for July arrived in the office, Cow takes a bow and other tales immediately caught our eye.  Part of the Usborne Phonics Stories series, this hardback includes six stories, each with irresistable illustrations, that are perfect for sharing with young children.

The stories use phonic repetition and simple rhyming text, specially designed to help develop essential language and early reading skills. Each story will soon help children identify common sounds, such as the 'ow' in cow, the 'ai' in snail the 'ee' in bee etc. The books are filled with fun rhymes to look out for and there are puzzles at the end of the book for further practice.

What we particularly like about the book, is that besides being good practice for beginner readers, it would make a delightful story book in its own right. Fred Blunt's humourous and almost 'silly' illustrations have a definite Quentin Blake element to them, and are great for bringing the narrative to life.

Stories include: Cow takes a bow, Snail brings the mail, Bee Makes Tea, Underpants for Ants, Croc gets a shock and Crow in the snow. Available now for £9.99.

Great, how do I get one?

What is Phonics?

Phonics is a method of teaching reading which is used extensively in today's schools. At its heart is an emphasis on identifying the sounds and letters, or combinations of letters, that are then put together to make words. These sounds are known as phonemes. Learning to read is an important milestone for any child. The process can begin well before children start to read letters and put them together to read words. The sooner children can discover books and enjoy stories and language, the better they will be prepared for reading themselves, first with the help of an adult and then independently.
