Usborne 40th Birthday Party

25th June 2013

Amy Cooke

Usborne Team Leader, Amy Cooke, tells us all about her experience of attending the Usborne Publishing 40th Birthday party at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, on June 19th:

"Last week my husband and I were privileged to attend Usborne's 40th Anniversary party at the V&A in London. Why, you may ask, well I was the winner of the Golden Ticket, an incentive launched at the beginning of this year for only one winner…..which just so happened to be me. I mentored six of my new recruits to achieve their Kit Boost (placing 3 X £100 orders in their first three weeks of joining).

From the beginning it was very top secret, the invitation said…….. "In your wildest dreams you cannot imagine the spectacular surprises that await you" and it certainly did live up to expectations.

On arrival at the doors of the V&A, Mark Franklin, Usborne Books at Home's Marketing Director, took us through to the museum's beautiful gardens, where we drank champagne and soaked up the evening sunshine whilst mingling with Usborne's staff; including the amazing Peter Usborne himself.

Peter then gave a very funny speech (complete with amusing sound effects) to his eager audience. My husband got very excited when he realised the re-released Spy Craft was the one he had as a child in the 70s! He has been reading it ever since (and doing all the activities too).

We also had exclusive entry to the sold out David Bowie exhibition, which was outstanding. I have to admit I am not a big fan, but found the design of it really inspiring and thought provoking and felt very special to have seen it for myself.

The buffet style food was delicious, all set out around the free bar, and served by waiters dressed as spies. We ate crudités, risotto, blinis with caviar and smoked salmon and mini bowls of Sunday dinner with the most amazingly tender beef and mini Yorkshire puddings. Dessert was a help yourself sweet stall, with sticky toffee popcorn, white chocolate buttons and champagne jelly, served in mini champagne flutes! I was a child in a sweet shop and filled my striped pink and white bag full!

So that was it, 11.30pm and it was all over. My husband and I both agreed it was an experience we will never forget. I am waiting with bated breath for the next incentive and hope I may be the lucky winner again."

Thank you Amy! What a worthy celebration of 40 years of Usborne Publishing and the celebrations continue on 3rd July with our Trip to Le Manoir!
