Focus on - fundraising through Usborne events

3rd June 2013

Lynn Winsper

Team Leader, Lynn Winsper, enjoys using her Usborne business to fundraise for good causes. Here she tells us a little more about it:

"Two of my April events have stood out from the others this month because they involved charities. The first event was for The Book Bus and the second was for Hugs for Henry.

The first event was a sponsored reading event for a school in Horrabridge, Devon.  The school had decided from the start that they would donate a percentage of their books to a charity called The Book Bus. The Book Bus aims to improve child literacy rates in Africa, Asia and South America by providing children with books and the inspiration to read them. The Book Bus is currently out in the community in Zambia, Malawi and Ecuador.

The school managed to raise a total of £851 for their sponsored Read and over £200 at a book fair. This helped them to receive a total of over £1300 in books! The school donated £500 worth of books to The Book Bus and they were presented at an assembly on the 17th of April.

The second event was an online Facebook book promotion for a Charity called Hugs for Henry. Henry is a 3 year old boy, local to Plymouth who has Neuroblastoma, a form of cancer found in children. Hugs for Henry aims to raise £500,000 for groundbreaking treatment in the USA for Henry.

I had seen a few events locally and decided that I would have go at a Facebook promotion and try and raise some money for the appeal and also that for every £100 raised I would donate a free book to Henry to keep him busy in hospital. I thought I might sell a few hundred pounds worth of books, but currently the total is sitting at just below £1130 and Henry has 10 books!

He has been in Plymouth this week and is travelling for his treatment with The Busy Train, Sticker Action Heroes, some farm flap books, activity and story books to keep him busy during his next treatment of radiotherapy. I've also raised over £130 for the appeal. I have met some lovely people, and also increased my team; recruiting two new Organisers. I will carry on raising money for the appeal with all my raffles throughout the year and have been asked to repeat the promotion again just before Christmas!"

Thanks for sharing your story Lynn, we're very pleased that through Organisers, like you, Usborne can help get books into the hands of more children and support charities too.
