Organiser of the Month - Charlene Riviere
18th March 2019
We know it can be quite a balancing act making time for your Usborne business in amongst existing commitments. March's Organiser of the Month has stepped out of her comfort zone to discover the best ways of making her business work for her, building some wonderful relationships with schools and achieving incredible results in the process.
Charlene was nominated by her mentor, Lisa Colley:
"Charlene has been with Usborne for just over three years and has found, after trying lots of different angles with her Usborne business, that she loves working with schools. As Charlene works full time and doesn't drive, she has found that sponsored reading events in particular work perfectly for her - she doesn't need to carry around a lot of books, and can run them mostly from home (or whilst commuting to and from work!). She even uses her lunch hour to follow up with her schools contacts by phone and email.
I am in awe of her amazing diligence. She has held regular sponsored reading events over the last year or so, and has been steadily contacting and recontacting new schools over the last few months. She now has an incredible 36 Ready, Steady, Read events booked in over the next couple of months, with even more in the pipeline!
What a fantastic advert Charlene is for working flexibly around another job. I'm really proud to see that her hard work is paying off."
Charlene shares her Usborne story with us:
I joined Usborne just over three years ago and soon found that I wanted to work with schools. I'm a mum, work full time in IT and am member of the PTA at my daughter's school. However I was determined not to let my lack of free time hold me back from working my Usborne business.
In the evenings and weekends I started to put together a list of all the schools I was planning on contacting, and each morning I would email them explaining about our fantastic sponsored reading scheme that could help their school get free books, depending on how much the children were able to raise.
In total, I've contacted over 1,000 schools. Last year, I had the pleasure of working with nine schools, one of which had their sponsored read over Christmas and managed to raise a whopping £1,772.87. This means they will get an outstanding £2,836.38 to spend on Usborne books.
Just before the start of the school year, I had decided that I would love to work with even more schools. When my Mentor, Lisa, asked me how many I was aiming for I said: 'at least ten' - we joked that I'd said 'at least...'!.
I contacted every school I could think of, and I'm so happy I did. At this point, I can say I now have 36 sponsored reads confirmed for March alone. I also have three book fairs scheduled.
Considering I work full time, I am amazed at what I have managed to achieve.
Earlier this week, I held my second sponsored read assembly in a three form entry primary school. It was so lovely to see how excited all of the children were when I said they could get free books for their school, and all they would need to do is raise £600. The looks on their faces is one of the reasons I do what I do.
Being an Usborne Organiser has really allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone. I found that having a 'the worst they could say is no' attitude really helps me approach things that would previously have daunted me with a positive mindset.
I know that I can literally do anything I put my mind to, and for that I am truly grateful."
Congratulations, Charlene! A copy of our March book of the month will be on its way to you very soon.
