Organiser of the Month - Darlene Martin Elder
5th October 2018
Running your own business is not without its own obstacles and challenges, but it's how you overcome these challenges that makes you successful. September's Organiser of the Month has worked hard to overcome her challenges and to achieve her goal of becoming a Team Leader.
Darlene was nominated by her mentor Keely Horn:
"Darlene joined my team in February 2017. I could tell from the start that she was hardworking, willing to learn, and wanted to turn this venture into a successful business. She quickly became part of the team, a role model to others with her attention to detail, and a real credit to Usborne Books at Home. If anyone ever needed guidance, support, or just a little reassurance, Darlene was there to be the help they needed. I spotted these qualities in her and knew she had the makings of an amazing mentor and successful Team Leader.
Darlene has faced challenges in her business over the last year, as well as in her own life, and many other Organisers could easily have walked away (which I have seen happen many times). This is where Darlene's determined nature and perseverance really came into their own and she has got back up again many times to make sure she reached her goals.
Last June she told me she wanted to become a Team Leader which was a huge, and at the time unreachable, goal for her. We have worked closely together over the last year or so through regular mentoring conversations, and Darlene came to the January MD Tour meeting and a Leadership Development day at Head Office, which were massive steps for her to take.
Darlene has been an inspiration to me and others in Team Kaleidoscope to never give up on your goal. She is one of the friendliest, kindest Organisers you could wish to meet and she is admired by many in our division.
Darlene has shown unfathomable commitment to her business through the good and bad times, working so incredibly hard to promote to Team Leader in May this year. She is now in Gold for the Autumn Season, which is thoroughly deserved, and has a team of 15, whom she has named the Adonis Blues. I don't doubt she will continue to fly as she continues on her journey."
Darlene shares her Usborne story with us:
"I started my Usborne journey in February 2017. I joined because I wanted to feel I was achieving something, like I was making a difference to other people's lives, and because I have always had a love of children's books
I didn't plan to become a leader, I considered it for a long time before I finally decided I wanted to move my business forward another step and started looking seriously at becoming a Team Leader. I started recruiting and made this the main focus of my business whilst I built the great team I have now. I qualified as Team Leader in May this year and this amazing moment brought with it the fabulous opportunity to be in Gold for the Autumn season.
My current focus is to keep growing my team and to continue helping others to achieve their dreams of running their own business by being the best mentor I can be. I also really enjoy the events side of Usborne and I am already planning where I will be taking my books next year.
I have met many bumps and hit quite a few walls on my journey so far, but I found ways round and over them, mainly by talking things through with my wife, who is a huge support to me, my mentor, and knowing I was part of such a supportive team and network. Another thing that has helped is my sheer determination to achieve what I have set out to do, and not give up on my dream despite the obstacles such as health problems. I thoroughly enjoy helping others and getting books into the hands of children and no amount of walls are going to stop me.
When I joined Usborne I had next to no confidence and would never have thought I could talk to strangers about books every day. I wanted to do it, but I couldn't visualise it happening - now I do it every day and I love sharing them. The reason I joined and my original 'why' are still there, but there is much more to my 'why' now. Now I want to run my own successful business which brings in a wage every month that can make a better, more flexible and enjoyable life for myself and my wife, whilst helping to make a difference to the lives of others."
Congratulations Darlene! A copy of our September Book of the Month will be on its way to you very soon.
