Fascinating facts about Miami
Our 2009 Usborne Travel Incentive winners will be absorbed in the delights of this ultra trendy city next February, on the first stop of a luxury five-day all-inclusive cruise to Mexico.
- Tequesta Indians lived in the swampland which we now know as Miami for an estimated 2000 years. The area was known as 'Mayaimi' in the sixteenth century, and the Spanish built a mission there in 1567. Miami remained secluded until the American acquisition of Florida in 1821.
- In 1896, Florida East Coast Railroad was completed and opened
Miami up to the rest of the United States, marking the birth of
a new city.
- In the early twentieth century, John S. Collins and Carl F. Fisher undertook an ambitious real estate project that transformed a swamp into present-day Miami Beach.
- In the 1940s, Miami became home to many soldiers and also became the home of outlaw Al Capone.
- In the 1950s tourism grew rapidly and with mass Cuban immigration, Miami soon became the gateway to Latin America.
History
- South Beach - famed for its pastel and stainless steel Art Deco buildings. The legendary Ocean Drive boulevard hosts Miami's trendiest boutiques, bars and restaurants - where local celebrities such as Gloria Estefan, Madonna, Ricky Martin and Donatella Versace frequent.
- Coral Gables - residential area renowned for its fine, elegant architecture including the Biltmore Hotel, Fairchild Tropical Garden and the Venetian Pool.
- Little Havana - the distinctly Latin district, home to the city’s Cuban population.
